Reference Letter

Write a credible reference letter in under a minute — employment, character, court, personal, or landlord. Add your relationship and a few specifics, pick the purpose, and copy or download the result as a PDF. Five copy-paste reference letter examples are below.

What a reference letter is

A reference letter is a written statement in which someone who knows you vouches for your abilities, character, or reliability. Unlike a recommendation aimed at one specific role, a reference can support a job application, a rental, a court matter, or a general endorsement — and the framing shifts with the purpose.

What stays constant is credibility. A reference carries weight because of who is writing it and how well they know the subject, so the strongest letters open by establishing that relationship — "I managed Jordan for three years," "I've been Jordan's neighbor since 2019" — before describing qualities with a concrete example. Vague praise helps no one; a specific moment that shows honesty, competence, or reliability is what a hiring manager, landlord, or judge actually weighs. The generator above adapts the letter to the purpose you choose, from an employment reference to a character reference for court.

A complete reference letter includes your relationship to the person and how long you've known them, two or three relevant qualities each backed by an example, a sentence tailored to the purpose, and a clear closing statement of support with your contact details so the reader can verify it. Keep it to a single page.

How to write a reference letter

01

State your relationship

Open with who you are, how you know the person, and for how long. Credibility comes first.

02

Describe their qualities

Give two or three qualities relevant to the purpose, each backed by a specific, true example.

03

Match the purpose

Frame it for the context — a job, a rental, a court letter, or a personal reference — without overstating.

04

Support and sign

End with a clear statement of support, your contact details, and your signature.

1. Professional / employment reference letter (worked sample)

June 3, 2026 To Whom It May Concern, I'm pleased to provide a reference for Daniel Okafor, who worked as a Customer Success Associate under my supervision at Brightwave Software from March 2023 to May 2026. Daniel consistently turned frustrated customers into loyal ones — most notably during our 2025 billing migration, when he personally handled our 40 highest-risk accounts and retained every one of them. He took ownership of problems without being asked and was the person the rest of the team turned to under pressure. I recommend Daniel without hesitation and am happy to answer any questions at marisa.cole@brightwave.example or (415) 555-0182. Sincerely, Marisa Cole Customer Success Manager, Brightwave Software

2. Character reference letter (worked sample)

June 3, 2026 To Whom It May Concern, I've known Priya Raman for eight years as a close friend and former neighbor, and I'm glad to give a character reference. Priya is genuinely honest and dependable. When a neighbor's package was left at her door by mistake while they were travelling, she tracked down the owner and returned it herself rather than leave it unattended — a small thing that says a lot about how she treats people. She follows through on what she says and is unfailingly fair. I'm confident recommending Priya and can be reached at j.bennett@example.com. Sincerely, James Bennett

I can be reached at [contact]. Respectfully, [Your name]

4. Personal reference letter

To Whom It May Concern, I'm writing a personal reference for [Name], whom I've known for [time period] as [relationship]. [Name] is someone I trust completely. They're [quality], and I've seen it in how they [specific example]. Whatever they're applying for, they'll bring the same reliability and good judgment I've always known them to have. I'm happy to provide more detail at [contact]. Warm regards, [Your name]

5. Landlord / tenant reference letter

[Name] paid rent on time, kept the property in excellent condition, and was respectful of neighbors throughout the tenancy. There were no issues, and I would happily rent to them again. Please feel free to contact me at [contact] for anything further. Sincerely, [Your name]

Reference letter do's and don'ts

Do

  • Keep it specific and honest — one concrete example outweighs a paragraph of adjectives.
  • Tailor the framing to the purpose: an employer wants reliability and skill, a landlord wants payment history and care for the property, a court wants character described respectfully.
  • Include your contact details so the reader can confirm the reference is genuine.

Don't

  • Exaggerate or vouch for something you haven't seen — your name is on it, and references are often verified.
  • Argue a court case or the merits of a dispute — stick to character.
  • Leave bracketed blanks in the final letter; fill every detail in before you send it.
